(Click here for more good quotes on challenges)
Life is filled with challenges. Most of the people that have achieved great things in life, only did so after enduring great challenges. Steve Jobs was fired from the company that he started. Michael Jordan missed the cut to be on his middle school basketball team. Hank Aaron had far more strikeouts than home runs. None of these men arrived at their goals without making it through a series of challenges.
“The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
In 1501 a 26 year old man was walking down a street in Florence, Italy. Amid the trash on the side of the road lay a discarded piece of carrara marble. It had been thrown out by the previous owner as trash. Evidently he had tried to carve something with it but had messed up. He thought what he once had was without value. He threw it away.
The young man picked it up and carried it to his shop. He carved the 17’ tall statue of David from it. The young man was Michelangelo. He carved the statue of David from a piece of marble that was discarded as “trash”.
I tried to determine the value of the statue but no one appears to know. Even Google has no answer. In 2009 alone, tickets sold just to see it topped 7 million dollars.
Michelangelo created a masterpiece from a piece of garbage. He made it a priceless piece of garbage.
